No need to order delivery! We’ve got a step by step recipe for making a salmon roll at home that is so easy, you’ll want to break out your knives and bamboo rolling mat on the regular. Bonus: it’s loaded with creamy avocado and bright, crunchy cucumber!

A SALMON AVOCADO ROLL YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME

While it’s always fun to eat maki (sushi rolls), there’s something so satisfying about a sushi roll you crafted yourself. Grab the kids and make a fun cooking project out of it! As long as you have sashimi grade salmon, fresh avocado, a bamboo rolling mat – and a little patience for your first few tries – it’s as easy as roll, cut, eat!

But a good sushi roll recipe is more than just fish, veggies, rice and nori (thin sheets of dried seaweed). To really nail the flavor, there’s a trinity of ingredients you add to your cooked rice as a sushi rice seasoning that will have it tasting exactly like your favorite sushi joint!

HOW TO MAKE SUSHI RICE

The first step to getting this cucumber, avocado and salmon roll recipe on point from a flavor perspective is making the sushi rice just so. Rice vinegar, sugar and salt are added to cooked short grain Japanese rice to add a subtle balance of sweet, savory and tang. Not only does it complement the flavor of the roll itself, it also plays nice with wasabi and soy sauce, delivering a complex, nuanced bite.

Sushi rice comes in handy for all types of rolls and dishes. Check out a few of our favorites that are just as easy to make as this salmon roll!

And, if you’re a visual learner (just like we are), we’ve got a step-by-step video on how to make sushi rice and how to roll sushi (maki). Check out our video here.

Salmon Roll

Rice Cooker Recipe

No need to order delivery! We’ve got a step by step recipe for making a salmon roll at home that is so easy, you’ll want to break out your knives and bamboo rolling mat on the regular. Bonus: it’s loaded with creamy avocado and bright, crunchy cucumber!

  1. Place cooked rice in a container and add rice vinegar, sugar and salt. Mix well.
  2. Wrap bamboo mat with plastic wrap and have a bowl of water mixed with a little rice vinegar on the side.
  3. Lay a nori sheet with the shiny side facing down on the bamboo mat. Add 1 cup of rice to the center of the nori sheet and wet your fingers with vinegar water.
  4. Spread the rice using your fingers, evenly across the nori sheet.
  5. Sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds onto the rice evenly across.
  6. Turn the nori sheet over so the rice is facing down. Move the nori sheet close to the edge of the bottom of the bamboo mat.
  7. Cut salmon, cucumber and avocado into stick size pieces and place horizontally on the nori. Each ingredient should form a line across.
  8. Grab the bottom edges of the mat with your thumbs and hold on to the toppings with your other fingers.
  9. Roll into a tight cylinder and lift the edges of the bamboo mat to prevent it from rolling into the roll together with the filling. The mat should look like the letter C from the side as you roll forward. Keep rolling forward using a little pressure and let go when the roll is done.
  10. Cut the roll in half and then into thirds.
  11. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi.
